One To Call "Friend" (友達という者, Furendo to iu Mono) is the fifth chapter of the KonoSuba Bakuen manga series, and covers the Prologue and Chapters 4 to 5 in Volume 1 of the light novels.

Summary[]

During the first class of the day that involves producing magical items, Megumin, in a display that freaks out many of her classmates, cuts up some struggling Mandrakes as ingredients for a medicine able to cure any sickness. She next reaches for the Duxion, only for Yunyun to stop her from touching the cute monster. The situation deescalates when upon Arue's inquiry, Megumin points out that she only needs the onion carried by the Duxion for the medicine. Yet once the relieved Yunyun talks about Duxions giving a lot of experience points as well as being delicious, Megumin abruptly snaps its neck so that she can level up, much to Yunyun's horror.

After school, Megumin now nicknamed the "Duxion Slayer" gives her finished medicine to Funifura and Dodonko before demanding Yunyun's money back, then when Funifura points out there's no guarantee the medicine will work, threatens to make them her first targets once she learns magic. The two girls accordingly back down and return the money, though they comment on how much Megumin likes Yunyun, setting off a beatup by the irked Megumin.

Megumin later spots Yunyun waiting for her by the school's gate with Shadow, so she hands over the money and vaguely explains what happened. Yunyun subsequently takes her to the lakeside, where Megumin reveals that she only needs one more vial of skill-up potion to graduate, due to leveling up from killing the Duxion. Yunyun then lets slip how she had been intentionally not becoming the top three so she won't graduate before Megumin or surpass her in skill points, thus Megumin who rebukes her for stupidity reveals to her how she is secretly saving up much more skill points for Explosion Magic.

She goes on to describe how as a child she had been attacked by a monstrous beast, only to be saved by a voluptuous wizard who cast Explosion, so having studied Explosion Magic from that wizard subsequent to that encounter, she plans to work for a while after learning the magic before journeying out to show that wizard her Explosion. Yunyun then talks of how she is going to succeed the post of chief as the village's best wizard, but is cut off when Megumin kills a wild Duxion passing by for dinner.

Yunyun though barely has time to get angry before alarms blare over the village, and the girls upon seeing flocks of servants of the Evil Spirit filling the sky, is reminded of the ritual Pucchin had mentioned which apparently failed. Shoving Shadow into her backpack, Megumin invites Yunyun to hide at her home to the loner's delight. Yet upon arrival, they discover signs of Megumin's home being attacked, with Komekko nowhere to be found.

After being made to calm down by Yunyun, Megumin assures herself that Komekko is outside, only to find as soon as they step out Shadow being taken by one of the Demons. Choosing to focus on Komekko first, Megumin recalls her sister talking about playing where she found a toy. She goes on to remember how she herself as a child played with the same toy, which she had asked the voluptuous wizard to help find the pieces for after they were scattered by her Explosion, and was told that they were used for sealing an Evil Spirit. Linking all the dots between Komekko, the puzzle piece, the servants of the Evil Spirit, and Shadow together, Megumin finally realises what had been going on.

It so happened that following the completion of the puzzle at the tomb, instructions appeared saying that a sacrifice consisting of a female bird and its young needs to be made. Komekko proceeded to bring along a bowl of chicken-and-egg rice, which Host dismissed as foolish. After describing how the one half of Wolbach he was trying to free looks like a terrifying huge black magical beast, Host departs for a long while to find the sacrifice himself. Left alone to eat the rice bowl, Komekko noticed a snarling beast looking like a little black cat with wings emerging, so after preventing it from going after her lunch, Komekko defeated the beast by biting on it, and brought it home to be her and Megumin's dinner.
