Synopsis[]
It's great for Kazuma that he brought Aqua along with him, but unlike in a game world, much is missing from his adventurer's lifestyle. No money, no equipment, and even fighting the lowest ranking monsters is a hard-fought battle. That's when they decide to recruit new party members.
Plot[]
Disgusted at Aqua sleeping until almost noon while lamenting the lack of financial security for beginner adventurers who can only afford accommodation in stables, Kazuma is nonetheless unashamed at spending a long while watching the pajama-clad Aqua sleep. He brings just a short sword on their first subjugation quest, which requires they defeat five Giant Toads in three days.
He finds himself running for his life in the grasslands outside Axel from one of the Giant Toads, that can swallow livestock or people whole, as Aqua giggles in amusement. When she lists out the terms for saving him, however, the Giant Toad switches directions and snaps her up instead. Since Giant Toads stay still while slowly swallowing prey, this gives Kazuma the opportunity to kill it. Aqua clings to him, weeping with gratitude, but he is revolted at the Giant Toad saliva she is covered in. Wanting to redeem herself in Kazuma's eyes, Aqua charges at a Giant Toad coloured pink and attempts to kill it with God Blow, only to have her punch deal no damage. It gobbles her, forcing Kazuma to save her again.
Eating fried toad back at the Adventurer Guild that night, Aqua suggests they recruit new party members despite Kazuma's misgivings. The following day, they post a recruiting advertisement for somebody of an advanced Class without getting a response. Just as they are considering lowering the bar, a petite girl with red eyes identifying herself in a display of pompous chuunibyouness as the Archwizard Megumin offers to join, before she collapses in hunger. While Kazuma grapples with Megumin over the eyepatch she wears for coolness, Aqua explains how Crimson Demons like Megumin are all powerful mages with weird names and personalities. After ordering Megumin food, they take her outside town to continue the quest against the Giant Toads.

While Aqua unleashes God Requiem on a grey Giant Toad, only to be gobbled up again, Megumin performs the chants for her Explosion Magic, reducing a distant purple Giant Toad to a smoking crater. Another Giant Toad is awakened by the detonation. Exhausted from the spell, Megumin is unable to avoid being eaten, forcing Kazuma to save both girls, which completes the quest.
While being carried back to town, Megumin explains that due to its high power, she can only cast Explosion magic once a day before she collapses in exhaustion, but she is so obsessed with Explosion magic that she refuses to learn anything else. As Aqua boasts about having learnt all Archpriest Magic in addition to party skills, Kazuma tries to ditch Megumin, only for her to make such a scene on the streets that he has to keep her. When the girls are off bathing, Kazuma claims the meagre quest rewards and laments that he is still too low-leveled to take more difficult quests. A Crusader named Darkness offers to join the party.
