A Final Flame for this Ridiculous Fortress! (この理不尽(りふじん)要塞(ようさい)終焔(しゅうえん)を!, Kono Rifujin na Yōsai ni Shūen wo!) is the tenth episode of the KonoSuba anime and the last episode of Season 1, which covers Chapter 5 to the Epilogue in Volume 2 of the light novels, or Chapter 19 to Chapter 21 of the manga.

Synopsis[]

The rampaging ancient weapon: the mobile fortress, Destroyer, is headed straight for Kazuma and party's city!

Plot[]

As Luna warns townsfolk to evacuate while pledging for adventurers to assemble at the Guild, Aqua and Megumin pack up to flee from the rampaging Mobile Fortress Destroyer that Darkness says will destroy everything in its path, but Kazuma is determined to save his newly acquired home. Following the meeting with other adventurers, where Kazuma at Chris' prompting comes up with a plan to counter the ancient weapon expected to arrive at Axel in an hour, Darkness stands guard outside the city walls as construction workers assemble barricades, during which she confesses to Kazuma her real name as well as her true identity as a noblewoman charged with defending her protectorate.

Aqua climbs atop the city walls as the Destroyer comes in sight, and breaks the its magic barrier with a Sacred Break Spell, enabling Megumin and Wiz to blast its legs with Explosions, which makes it grind to a halt. But when the other adventurers cheer their success, the Destroyer broadcasts a warning about its imminent self-detonation.

Instead of fleeing, Darkness charges the Destroyer out of masochistic excitement, so the other adventurers, thinking she is attempting to stop the detonation, all follow suit, though some of them do so to save the Succubus Cafe. Leaving the immobile Megumin outside, Kazuma as the adventurers storm the fortress takes Aqua and Wiz to seek its control room, where they find the remains of the Head Researcher tasked with constructing the Destroyer. They read in his diary how he set the fortress into construction just to avoid execution, before spending the remainder of his life trapped on the Destroyer when it went on a rampage, which started by destroying the kingdom that constructed it.

Wiz uses Drain Touch on Kazuma to recharge her magical power, allowing her to Randomly Teleport the Coronatite used as the Destroyer's power source at Kazuma's direction. The Destroyer, however, has accumulated so much heat that it will burn down the city. As everybody flees from it, Kazuma drains power from Aqua to recharge Megumin (who the Ruffian carried along), enabling her to blow the Destroyer to pieces with her second Explosion of the day.

The inhabitants of Axel soon return to their lives, until knights arrive from the Royal Capital. Yet when Kazuma and other adventurers meet them at the Guild, the accompanying prosecutor says the Coronatite Kazuma ordered to be Teleported obliterated the local governor's mansion, and charges him for treason.

Differences to other versions[]

  • The fights with the Golems defending the Destroyer in the light novel were cut out.
  • Many of the funny scenes from Axel strategy meeting and Head Researcher's diary shown in the light novel were either condensed or cut out entirely. The contents of the diary as written in the light novel, though, still got faithfully displayed visually in the shots of the pages, which can be read after translating the other world's language.
  • In the light novel, Mitsurugi is present at the strategy meeting to fight Destroyer but Chris is not, while in the anime he had been working the whole time in a faraway location alongside Fio and Cremea.
  • In the light novel, Darkness did not reveal her real name or background until the next volume.

Trivia[]

  • In the initial television broadcast, fantastic dreamer was used as an insert song instead of the opening.
